Office 365 Updates for the Week of September 30th

Sharing Reports for OneDrive: Last week a similar report was introduced for SharePoint site owners; a report showing what content is being shared outside the organization.  Now, OneDrive users will now have a similar report available.

The report will generate a CSV file that shows every unique file, user, permission and link, and item on the site, including files shared outside the organization.  To generate the report, OneDrive user simply need to go to OneDrive Settings à “More Settings” page.  The configuration of the report will include:

  • Path to the item
  • Type of item
  • Share permission
  • Username of who has access
  • Email of user who has access
  • User type: Internal, Guest SharePoint, Security or Office 365 group
  • GUID of the sharing link
  • Link type: Anonymous, Company, Specific people.
  • Link ID used the access the item

OneDrive users in targeted release tenants can expect to see this feature beginning in early October.  General release is scheduled for all customers (including GCC and Department of Defense), beginning in late October with the rollout scheduled to be complete by the end of November.

 

Outlook Web Access Blocked File Types: Microsoft will be making changes to the file attachment types that OWA will prevent from downloading.  Most of these file types are either fairly old or rarely used.  The list of file types to be added to the default block list:

  • Python script language extensions: ".py", ".pyc", ".pyo", ".pyw", ".pyz", ".pyzw"
  • PowerShell extensions: ".ps1", ".ps1xml", ".ps2", ".ps2xml", ".psc1", ".psc2", ".psd1", ".psdm1", “.cdxml”, “.pssc”
  • Windows ClickOnce: “.appref-ms”
  • Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC): “.udl”
  • Windows sandbox: “.wsb”
  • Digital certificates: “.cer”, “.crt”, “.der”
  • Java: ".jar", ".jnlp"
  • Various extensions blocked because they are associated with vulnerabilities in the past: ".appcontent-ms", ".settingcontent-ms", ".cnt", ".hpj", ".website", ".webpnp", ".mcf", ".printerexport", ".pl", ".theme", ".vbp", ".xbap", ".xll", ".xnk", ".msu", ".diagcab", ".grp"

New Teams Delegate Permission: For Office 365 clients that have a PSTN license, managers will be able to grant delegates the ability to modify Teams call settings and add other delegates.  This is yet another update that will bring Teams in line with existing Skype for Business options.

Teams call delegation options available are:

  • Assign a delegate to make calls on their behalf
  • Assign a delegate to receive calls on their behalf
  • Change call and delegation settings

Updated minimal requirements for macOS: For Office 365 clients with macOS users, you need to be aware that Microsoft has changed the requirements for Mac users accessing the service. Beginning in November 2019, macOS 10.13.6 or later is required to receive updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.  Older versions of macOS will continue to work, but you will no longer receive any updates.

Office for Mac supports the Apple’s three most recent versions of macOS.  With the upcoming release of macOS 10.15 Catalina, Office 365 for Mac and Office 2019 will support macOS 10.15, 10.14, and 10.13.

 

Updated SharePoint start page experience: Microsoft is updating the SharePoint start page (previously SharePoint home) experience.

The new SharePoint start page will have a whole new user interface along with important usability updates.  Here is a summary of what’s new:

  • Browse news and sites without leaving the start page
  • Arrange sites based on content that’s relevant to your work
  • Navigate to important tools and featured links right from the start page
  • Access recently used documents quickly and securely

The SharePoint start page can be launched from Office.com by clicking on SharePoint from the list of applications or from anywhere in Office 365 by clicking on the App launcher.

The new SharePoint start page will be available to Targeted Release customers beginning in early October with a worldwide release beginning November 1st , 2019.
